Following the successful first series of the pooled basic income project, we are now launching a second series. In this series, we return to the same groups, giving additional members the opportunity to access support through their commitment pools.
For Kiriba Chama, four new members have now accessed the pooled funds and used them to meet practical livelihood and household needs. These activities show how continued rounds of support can reach more people within the same group while keeping value circulating in the community. Each member who accesses value from the commitment pool commits to supporting those who come after them through their own funds, goods, services, or labour.
In this way, the benefits do not stop with the first people who access the pool. Its value continues to rotate through the group as members support one another.
Use of Funds
In this round with Kiriba Chama, four additional members were able to address needs that matter directly to them, from repairing a machine and supporting poultry farming to securing their farms.
Anthony Kalume – Repairing His Machine
Anthony Kalume accessed a loan from the pool to repair his machine. Getting the machine working again was important to him, and the pooled funds gave him the opportunity to make the necessary repairs.
Anthony shares:
“I am very happy that I was able to access this support and repair my machine. Having the machine working again means a lot to me.”
Dama Charles – Supporting Her Poultry
Dama Charles used her support to buy poultry medicine and maize jam. These were needs she had identified for her poultry, and accessing the funds through the pool enabled her to purchase them.
Dama shares:
“I used the money to buy medicine for my poultry and maize jam. These were things I needed but was struggling to get. I am very happy that I could access the funds through our group and buy what I needed.”
Lydia Sidi – Fencing Her Shamba
Lydia Sidi used the funds she accessed to fence her shamba. The fencing will help her secure the farm and protect what she grows there.
Lydia shares:
“I wanted to fence my shamba, and this support has helped me do it. I am very happy because I can now better protect my farm.”
Henzo Shedrack – Fencing Her Shamba
Henzo Shedrack also accessed funds from the commitment pool to fence her shamba. The support enabled her to invest directly in securing her farm.
Henzo shares:
“I used the money I accessed from the pool to fence my shamba. Thank you for making it possible for me to
do something that was important for my farm.”
